A Nymph and Satyr, by Giovanni Lanfranco

A large canvas of a Nymph and Satyr was taken to Paris by Jean-Baptiste Pierre Lebrun, and exhibited there in 1809 as a masterpiece by Ludovico Carracci. From 1865, all trace of this painting was lost, until it recently resurfaced in a French auction. Here it is reattributed to Giovanni Lanfranco, at the peak of his powers in the early 1620s. But even by then, Lanfranco certainly was still recalling Carracci precedents.
