Ragazza alla finestra e Nuove sacerdotesse: due diversi dipinti futuristi di Carlo Carrà

Based on some primary print sources of the time, the article retraces the exhibition history of two never-published paintings, Ragazza alla finestra (Woman at the Window) and Nuove Sacerdotesse (New Priestesses), thus shedding new light on the identification of these works which should be attributed to Carlo Carrà and related to the painter’s first Futurist artistic phase. Specifically, thanks to the discovery of a photographic reproduction, the work Ragazza alla finestra (Woman at the Window) can be finally identified as different from Simultaneità (Simultaneity) for which it was often mistaken in the scholarly literature. As for Nuove Sacerdotesse (New Priestesses), the article proposes to identify it with Care puttane (Beloved Prostitutes), wrongly considered until today a work by Umberto Boccioni and identified by some scholars with La Retata (The Sting). On the contrary, the painting should be identified with the now lost Prostitute (Prostitutes) by Carrà which was exhibited at the Mostra dell’Arte Libera (the exhibition of Free Art) of 1911 with the title Care Puttane.
