Rinascimento umbratile in Abruzzo: considerazioni su un affresco frammentario di Andrea Delitio e sulla cronologia delle sue opere

The essay reconsiders and develops, with new critical elements, two proposals presented by Daniele Giorgi (2014) hitherto underappreciated by scholars and related to paintings by the Abruzzese Andrea Delitio, the leader of the so-called “Rinascimento umbratile.” In this paper, the backdating to 1452 of the fragmentary Chieti fresco and theexpunction of the paintings of the church of Saints John the Baptist in Lucoli from the artist’s catalog are analyzed and related to suggest a chronological revision of Delitio’s mature production, also in relation to the enigmatic character of Giovanni da Tagliacozzo, hypothesizing a more coherent and early reception of the Renaissance innovations that spread in the mid-15th century in the regions of Central Italy.
