Sulle tracce di un progetto ambizioso: il palazzo arcivescovile di Simone Saltarelli a Pisa

Despite the fact that on the turn of the last century in the present attics of the Pisan archbishopric some fragments of frescoes have re-emerged that can be traced back to the nucleus of the palace built at the behest of Simone Saltarelli (1323-1342), in the overview of art-historical studies on the fourteenth century in Pisa the prelate’s residence seems to have remained totally in the shadows. These paintings have so far not been exhaustively discussed by going into the possible context in which they were made. Starting precisely from these surviving material traces and from some documentary clues, in this contribution an attempt will be made to show how the project elaborated by Saltarelli stands as a significant episode not only in fourteenth-century Pisan history.
