Un David inedito di Orazio Gentileschi

The identification of a previously unknown David by Orazio Gentileschi, a painting datable to 1615-1620, enables us to re-examine the stylistic evolution and the iconographic experimentation of this painter, who distinguished himself among Caravaggio’s followers as an original interpreter of that very theme: it is enough to mention the David and Goliath at the National Gallery of Ireland, the David contemplating the head of Goliath at the Galleria Spada and the painting of the same subject at the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, as well as a number of reduced versions of known and unknown prototypes – where the scene is always se in bright landscapes – that the artist painted on both stone and copper.
