Japanese books and their illustrations

The history of Japanese illustrated books is almost the same as that of Japanese books in general. Although the original manuscripts of early literary works have not survived, there is ample reason to believe that they were illustrated. The oldest manuscript of one, Utsubo Monogatari (The Tale of the Hollow Tree), written in the tenth century, identifies with brief statements the lost illustrations found in the original text.
